Generator Question??

The number of turns of wire in both the armature, and field windings. 6v has somewhat thicker wires and fewer of them. A six Volt gen can be helped to make pretty reliable 14 volts (charging volts for 12V batterys) if the field windings are changed to 12v. But not ideal. A true 12v gen was standard on many IH/farmall tractors, and should be not too hard to find. Red label on generator was used (as well as serial#) to indicate 12v. JimN

JANICHOLSON gave you the good answer, but if I were a math teacher, I would have answered:

6 volts!

(12-6)=6volts!

Sometimes, I just can"t contain myself.

Thanks for the quick replies
Janicholson-That's the info I needed. I have a failed 6V and was wondering about using a 12V or a 12V for repair parts. Guess not. Thanks

jmor- After rereading my post I told my wife that I would get a response similar to yours. That's what makes it fun.

If you are working with a generator with a two piece adjustable pulley like an H or M, most twelve volt generators will not be a direct swap because the two piece cast pulley requires a longer armature shaft.
