Does my generator have a cutout or a regulator?

I am looking at Bobs wiring diagram and I am confused on how I figure out if my generator on my H has a cutout or a regulator? How do I tell? My generator has what I thought was a regulator mounted on the top of it but maybe it is a cutout. How do I tell the difference?

Both have a cutout inside. The voltage regulator has at least three terminals. (so might some Cutouts if used on tractors with no lights.
The Field terminal on the generator (small terminal) should go to the light switch in the control box at the drivers station. If the box you are looking at has 4 it is a VR. JimN

The cut-out will have a Field and Gen terminal on one side and the other side will have the Bat terminal. Only one coil when cover is removed.

My 47 Farmall A had what appeared to be a regular-sized voltage regulator on it, but on closer inspection, it is indeed a cut-out--- in other words, it only has one coil under the cover and fewer terminals than a regulator. My point is, both the VR and the cutout can look the same and be the same size.

How many clicks does your light switch make when you turn it?

Three = cutout type switch
Two = regulator type switch

This doesn't guarantee that you have a regulator or cutout, but it is an indicator as to what to look for.

Your light switch controls the charge rate on a cutout system. Low charge, high charge, dim lights w/high charge, bright lights w/high charge. If your cutout is working the ammeter should move further to the right when you move to the second position on a cutout system, but the lights should not come on.

The cutout relay on a John Deere is about half the size of a voltage regulator.

On Farmalls and IH the cutout relay and the voltage regulator are the same exact size and shape.

Cutouts are usually mounted on the generator, VR's are someplace else -- note that I said "usually". I believe all cutouts are on the generator, most VR's are not.
