M timing gears

Was called to a buddy of mine said his M wouldn"t run. I check it out. When I got to his house he had the plugs out. I put my finger over the spark plug hole. Compression on every stroke. Hum Must be something wrong with cam. Got to looking. Live hydraulic. Buddy said he started tractor up when zero outside Raised the loader ran it in shed to let it warm up. when he next checked upo on it it was dead. I thought timing gears busted. Checked distributer. It was turning. Question is whats wrong? if timing gears were bad, dist wouldn't turn. I guess I'll find out when we tear it down. Any suggestions. I did pull valve cover. No valve movement Bernie Steffen

If the keyway or key went bad that drives camshaft at camshaft gear the distributor can still turn and valves not open and close, or broken shaft.

Forgot, did you check compression with a gage? Don't think it would be good if camshaft doesn't turn.

I agree. Have a 450 Gas that used to shear the hydraulic pump gear key. You could catch it with the distributor by rotating wires around the cap and retiming. Ultimately, I pulled off regulator valve and found a shimmed up spring and a little piece of metal inside. No more sheared keys.

I have repaired tractors the hub of the pump drive gear broke, it rotated just a little and caught everything still turned, way out of time though.

Well if the pump key is good then it either sheared the camshaft key or broke the camshaft. Of coarse there are other really off the wall things but I would go with these.

First of all, thanks everybody for answering. Now I didn't check with pressure gage because I knew there wasn't enough pressure, and like I said it had compression on every stroke. which means to me valves weren't working. Some cylinders didn't have any compression at all. I guess that would mean valves were open. After I removed the valve cover, I could see none of the valves were working. I can only assume the cam isn't turning. I assumed early on the hydraulic pump on the distributer caused the timing gears to strip on the front of the motor. But why does the distributer still turn. Will help tear it down soon. Thanks again for the reply. Wil let you know what is up. Bernie Steffen

The cam gear hub is broken. It will still turn the other parts, but not the cam. The issue is pretty common. Radiator, Front pulley, front cover, and gears. (could be the keyway on the cam also. Use 400 or 450 gears. JimN
