How hard is it to put a new 3-4 gear in the transmisson on a 48 M? Does anyone have an idea as to the cost of the gear and the labor?

Wengers has new after market 3&4 gears for 125.00. You should know the serial number of the M to get the right gear or count the teeth. It is a little labor intensive to change the gears but it is not complicated.
Rollie,

Jim, 3 and 4 drive gears on the counter shaft are one unit. Jerry the trans top needs off and both main and counter shafts removed to replace 3 and 4 drive gear. Gears press on and off shaft with keyways in gears and shaft. Top shaft gears are splined. 4&5 driven gear is one piece and 2&3 are one piece. Don't know which you need but you will probably find something else that needs repair inside.

Iam asking since on our H we had to pull the rear axles out to get the pinion out to get the shaft out for that. Will he have to do that with this. I can't remember for sure.

I Agree, Just trying to Keep asumptions from being made. Replacing driven and drive together is best, but not always possible. JimN

Beware of the new gears, they made noise bad on my H at least the constant mesh gears did. They whined so bad you could hear it over a block away and that was with all new bearings in it also. I ended up using a nice used set of gears and replaced them in pairs from the same tranny and she quieted down.
