Farmall diesels

I would like to know if Farmall made an "M" in 1940 that is diesel instead of gas. I'm looking into refitting a 1940 "M" with a diesel engine, if that's possible. Any response would be appreciated. Thanks.

IH made a diesel version of the M the MD. I've got an M and an MD, and I woudn't want to try making one into the other. Many small differences, longer frame and sheetmetal are just a few basic ones. Probably a lot of old MD's out there yet that with a lot of money can be ok tractors. If your really gung ho and time and money are no object I would lean toward a new generation diesel motor. A much more usable machine when you're finished. G

MD with the gas start, 3 valve diesel engine was about that time. Same basic design used until mid 50s through 450 model. Good engine for it"s time , but heads were known to have problems over the years. RN

The Farmall M diesel came out in 1941, so the answer to your question is no.

The British M diesel engine is a direct-start diesel with glowplugs.
