back last yr or so ago i put new trans.drive shaft that needle bearing 4th,5th slider gear they were chewed all to heck. welp now all the sudden it started slipping out of 5th gear 1 finger will keep in gear running down the road. i pulled the belt pulley delete plate gears look `fine no slope in the bearings no chips looks just as i put them in new anything else i need to check

If the shifter only allows the gear to slide a tiny bit into engagement, the fork might help push it farther into gear. (requires removal of top) Through the belt drive opening, try to move the sliding gear forward with a small pry bar. If noticible travel is there, it can be made better by brazing a layer of material onto that side of the fork, and fitting it to the slider groove. Needs .002 clearance. JimN

yea with the trans in 5th gear there is about 1/16 to 1/8 inch untill its bottoms out against the drive shaft. now i can take i finger and lay it against the shifter it will pull tight against the drive shaft is there a detent to hold it in gear? i have hung up the shifter a few times could the shifter be worn enough to help cause this? i knew if i caught you Janicholson you could tell me something thank you again!

The tip of the shifter, if worn, can limit the travel of the shift rail, but the issue is probably rear in the shift fork, detent ball/spring, and teeth on the splines of both the gear and the input spline. The forward edge of the shifter slot in the 4th-5th rail can also be built up to increase the travel forward of the rail. There is a detent ball in the rail mount held into the rail notch with a spring. THe spring can become very weak. The total shift engagement on a New H is about 1/2" of shifter movement at the knob. I'll bet yours moves less than 1/8" from the tips of the splines touching to the point the lever stops moving. Good luck, and happy new year. Jim

As Jim mentioned - worn tip of the shift rod. Also, can be caused by weak detent springs. Also, check shift rails for wear. I just replaced my detent springs in my SH. I can feel the difference when shifting. A lot more "notchy" feeling now. mike
