Winter project surprises

Bought a Basket case M diesel this fall. It's one of those projects, that you might regret later! Notice the daylight where it should not be, and ice where there should be oil!

Been there, done that, more times than I'd like to admit. Maybe I should stay away from the brown bottles until AFTER the deal is done. Anyway, look at the bright side. You got a basket case. Maybe, you put $1,500.00 into it plus uncounted hours of blood, sweat and tears and you know that you can get at least $1,000.00 out of it any time you want! LOL.

Is that bottom picture what's left after you took the pan off? If so, guess I'll have to agree that this is not looking so good. . . But on the bright side, I once bought an Oliver 1550, and as was my custom, I immediately changed all the fluids, just to see where I was at on the thing. Got about 3 gallons of water when I took the drain plugs out of the transmission and final drive. Then some nasty looking oil. Then I flushed it, refilled with new oil- that was about 30 years ago, and its still going strong. So maybe not a bad as it looks. But what was that about the daylight???

I think the first picture... looks like transmission... under the gear at the top, there's a piece of the transmission housing missing... 'bout the size of old 1/2 dollar coin..

I did an H last year and the rearend gearbox was broken out just like that. The pto drive tags had broken off and got into the bull gear and popped a hole in the case.

keep the pics coming as you work on the M so we can see progress, you do have your hands full, but its not the worst anybody has seen, it is a project. giver :~)

Give her h*** when they are done they are fun. Good luck with the head they bring a premium. I got three of these great tractors. I love them. They ARE expensive. So be prepared you will put a ton of money in her. Unless you can find parts I got some if your looking had rearends that were perfect junked them about 6 months ago but. If you need help email I help all I can. Have fun with her.

Thanks for the offer Jay. Found a spare transmission at the nieghbor's place cheap. It should be a good project. Here's some more photos:

The #1 piston full of oil sludge, and the rest were full of rust. It cleaned up nice via the drill and wirecup brush.

26red, If you got it done in 2 weeks you would be out looking for another tractor. So this one will keep you in the shop for a while.

That is a great Photo/Ice sculpture!! Xray vision into the pan. Many have the bottom welded up successfully . Or make a mild steel plate to bolt over it. Either will work. JimN
