In keeping with the courtesy request (and my original intent) I posted what I found out regarding a recommended hydraulic rod source as a reply in the original thread. I'm posting it here for those folks like me who forget what happened a few days ago and just read the last day's worth of posts.
www.baileynet.com responded on the cost of the rod. 1.5" chrome plated rod sells today for $2.04 a foot and costs about $10 to ship it to Connecticut. This comes in a little more than my local hydraulics shop (about 20 miles away) which will sell the same stock for $17.04 a foot, plus a $10 cut fee to get the length one wants.
I should add that bailynet.com also sells very inexpensive cylinders so it may work out that just buying the cylinder will be cheaper than the above rigamarole.
