worn clutch pedal shaft on M

The clutch pedal shaft on my M is worn pretty bad and gives the pedal a lot of side to side play. I've replaced the pedal with one with a good hole. Anyway to fix the shaft without removing it from the tractor. I'm guessing not but I know somebody knows all the tricks if there is one.

The only way I can think of to repair the worn shaft without removing it from the tractor is to weld it up and grind smooth, it would be easier to do if it was removed though. It would be better to put the shaft in a lathe and turn it back to size after the worn area is welded up, it would be round and smooth that way.

I take my clutch pedals into the shop and they rebush them with greaseable bonze bushing. The shaft I build up with JB Weld. File to just about right and then use a strip of emery cloth to polish it perfect. There's no rapid movement there to build up heat or wear much. The KEY is getting a nice snug bushing in the pedal. I/m lucky, the local machinist is 70 years old and he says he has done at least 50 of the things.

Shaft is easy to remove, hardest part is getting the woodruff key out. -- A machine shop can make a new one for about the same cost as repairing the old one.

I may have a rather short lived repair but I used a copper sheeting to make a shim around the shaft. May not last too long but then again I only use the tractor about 50-60 hours a year . Henry

If i do recall the clutch pedal shaft and brake pedals shaft just slips out. It is a common shaft for all three pedals that doesn"t connect to anything inside.

It is just cold roll steel that needs a key way slots put back into a new one [ woodruf key ] so i don"t get called on this one. Any automotive machine shop with a Bridgeport can do this or maybe some you know that might have one.

My dad did this to his W-6 and it was very easy. There is plenty of bone yards that you might find goog pedals etc that are not worn.

I have one, that I have repaired, in the garage that is out of a junk tractor.
E-mail me. I will give to you for the cost of shipping.

OOPs! my mistake, it is not where I thought it was, which means that I do not have it repaired. Sorry
Steve.

Glade to see people are still fixing up these old girls. I can help you out with your clutch pedal problem. I have a little machine shop that I work in after I get home from teaching school. I have designed a gig fixture for holding the pedal in a bridgeport so I can bore out the pedal to install a brass bushing. I also build new shafts for different Farmall tractors. I have found it's cheaper to make a new shaft than trying to build up an old shaft and turning it back down to size. My e-mail is open

On my SM long long ago someone welded a piece of rebar to the edge of the deck and the pedal rides against it when you push it in.

I did basically the same as Henry did but I used soda can metal. A quick poor fix at best for mine. A new shaft is available from many sources but cost over 50 bucks. Getting one made should be a lot cheaper. If you pull that shaft install new seals on both sides. Good Luck! ...Randy
