Seasonal disconnect

The Seasonal Disconnect switch turns off the power to the IPTO. All the PTO's on the SMTA's I've heard have a "whine" noise in the PTO unit and turning the disconnect switch will turn off the PTO and stop the whine. I did it on Dad's SMTA and it is nice since we are not using the PTO right now. If you don't use the PTO much, turn off the power to the PTO with the Seasonal Disconnect, if you use the PTO alot, leave it on.

Steve: Two reasons, back in 1954 it was no point in turning IPTO, at time when it was not in use. Secondly the tractor started easier in cold weather.

We used to disconnect it on our Farmall 300 in Nov, and not recouple it until June. If we needed PTO, it was only 5 min. to couple it up. If cold weather we'd warm the tractor up than shut it down for coupling. It makes quite a difference starting when temperature is below 0, F.

I have been under my 300U several times looking for the seaonal disconnect but just cannot find it. Am I missing it or did some tractors not have it.

Thanks,
Dell

Thanks for the replies. I thought that was the reason but wanted to inform someone who was in doubt who is restoring a SMTA. Steve

Dell: It was discontinued as standard equipment during 300 production. Jim Nicholson has the serial number breakdown.

(quoted from post at 14:49:49 01/01/09) What is the purpose of the seasonal disconnect on a SMTA? THanks.
On my 300U it is on belly of tractor just to the rear of the clutch housing. Supposed to be a small 2" lever you turn 90 degrees.
