D 188 engine sleeves

Recently rebuilt aD-188 in my IH 504 utility, went pretty smooth I thought. My first dry sleeve experience .Since then I have been reading the horror stories of loose fitting sleeves in these engines. The front 3 fit pretty good,a hour in the freezer then a snug fit in warm block.#4 was a different story, did not realy snug up until about one inch from hitting block deck. Now Im worried about it flopping around, breaking at the top and falling down on the crank. These engines are scarce I dont want to destroy it. Great little tractor for my use,be lost with out it.
Had very little luck finding over size OD sleeves ,IH still lists them but dont know if realy available. What do you guys think, run or open it back up to take a secind look?
Thanks for the help and Happy New Year,
Butch

Ya did not look at the top of the block for the bore classification that is stamped next to each hole . There are two bore class. one is A-B and takes one sized sleeve and the other is a C-D class. that takes a little larger O/D sleeve . If you have a -B class and the bore mics. big then ya can clean up and go to a C-D class. sleeve But when ya have the C-D class. and it is to big then it is best to bore the block and install a repair sleeve and bore it to a A-B class for a A-B sleeve , this way it gives ya some play room . These kits that are being sold with a one size fit all can lead to big problems down the road and added expense.

Butch: I know of a couple of these sleeves breaking. I don't think it has to be a disaster if the sleeve breaks. My understanding is you always get a warning with mild knock that gets progressively worse. If you shut it down in time, it's only a matter of changing the sleeve.

With my 560, it was a case of a teenager blowing silage, 560 on the blower. It started knocking and he left it running and went for help. We know it ran 75 secondes before the crash. In the hands of a good operator, that is lots of time to shut down. The other one I know of was a 504, and the owner had time to shut down successfully.

You might ask the Vet about this, I'm sure he has seen a lot more of these than I've been expossed to.
