Super MTA---I am new to this tractor and have no manual. What kind of Hyd/trans fluid does it take? Hy-tran? 10W30? How do you check the level? Where do you fill it at?
It has a leaky seal on the rear axle. Is this a hard fix?
Thanks in advance and Happy New Years.

Hi Red,

Get yourself a manual. You don't have to have it in hand, just order it now so you'll have one on hand shortly. There are vendors on ebay; user "bsharptwo" puts out some pretty good reproduction manuals.

Rear end and transmission takes your favorite heavy gear oil. SAE 90, 85W-whatever, doesn't matter as long as it's the thick stuff. Fill is a plug on top of the deck to the right of the steering post as far as I know. Level check plug is on the left side; any pipe plug on a vertical surface is a level check plug.

To fix the seal, the wheel and tire have to come off. Whether that's a difficult fix or not depends on what you have to work with. If you've got a shop crane, another tractor with a loader, an overhead hoist, or several burly friends, it's an easy fix. Otherwise, it's going to be a lot of work that you may not want to tackle.

No that is incorrect as there was and update on what to use in the rearend and transmission on any tractor that has a T/A it was changed to Hy tran . IF ya use the 80-90 the T/A will slip in the low side and cause a failure of the ramp and rollers.

I scanned page 31 of the manual which is the lube chart, but cannot figure out how to post it.

It says the lift-all should have "IH Touch Control fluid" Whatever that is. I am betting it is close to hy-tran. 7 quarts.

The transmission and differential case takes 15 gallons of SAE 80.

The engine holds 8 quarts of SAE 30 if the temp is above 80. SAE 20 from 80 degrees down to +32 degrees F. and below +32, SAE 10.

Again this is all out of the owners manual.

Good luck, Gene

Hytran wasn't available back then. But's it is now highly recommended for the tranny, gearcase, becase of the TA.

If there's a grease plug at the end of the axle housing, try pumping a bunch of grease in there before you tear anything apart.

Knew a old IH dealer who told me about being required by IH to dump out the 90 wt(probably on the ground back then lol) and change it to Hy Tran back in late54 early55
