I recently purchased a MDV with a single front wheel (I believe it has an 18" tire) Possibly had a cotten picker on it. Any info on the possibilities of the front ends originality would be appreciated. The front end is definately IH eq.uipment

Most likely you have an ex high drum cotton picker tractor not a MDV. Couple signs of ex cotton picker tractor will be 2 shifter position rear frame cover and about 1/2 inch diameter holes in brake and clutch pedal shafts about 4 inches down from foot pads

Cotton picker tractors often had the big single wheel. I owned an MD with a single. Mine was a 750 10" which made the standard MD level front to back. Cotton picker Serial suffex was often X20 on the serial tag, but that is not a certainty. Rear axle housing flanges were also often very different. some were made to operate in reverse with a trans top and shifter relocated and the differential flipped to run backwards. Good luck. JimN

Serial plate on this tractor says MDV and has the full drop boxes on rear axles. Thanks for info so far. I'm looking for any help I can get. I have been told most V models came out with the high arch wide fronts.

High drum pickers are reversed in axle drop boxes, low drums are reversed by flipping ring gear, when ex high drum picker tractors are set up to run in forward direction in high clearance configuration you flipped ring gear and used 2 hole frame cover in effect reversing tractor twice.

In this country, every farmer had 2 front ends for his tractor. A single for the row crop work and a wide for everything else.

Grew up swapping those dudes 4 and 5 times a summer to put the tractor under the loader so as to put up hay every cutting.

Didn't actually see a real trike front end until I was 53 years old. :>)

Ellis,

If the serial plate says MDV somebody has swapped the original high wide front axle for the single fork from a high drum picker tractor which originally had a 750 x 20 single tire. High wide front was only front end available from factory on MDV although cotton picker single wheel will bolt right up. The drop housings on cotton picker tractors were bull gears whereas drop housings on MDV were chain drives. The high cotton pickers did not have two gearshift holes on the transmission top. However if your tractor is a high drum cotton picker tractor, and runs forward, it will have the transmission top ftom a low drum cotton picker tractor, which has two holes, in order to make it run forward.
