I need some new chrome-plated hydraulic cylinder rod stock - 1.5" x 18". Machining it here won't be a problem. Any of you folks know of a good inexpensive place to order that from? Thanks for your time.

In the Grainger 2000 catalog, they have chrome rod in 1 1/2 inch diameter by 18 inches for [sit down] $100. This is the 2000 catalog, so probably has gone up since then.

Thanks for taking the trouble to look that up. I like Granger when I need to find something it would be too much trouble to find anywhere else but, they can be a bit pricey. I was thinking there was a specialized industrial supply source folks might know about.

You're the man. I'll find out about the rod when they reply but so far it looks like the best hydraulics site I've seen. Thanks for the reference.

They have some deals too but Bailey seems a little lower on stuff. Seems like they had everything but rods. I googled it but didn't come up with much for just bare rod. Has to be as source for them somewhere. I don't know of a machine shop that would touch the rod ends for the price that you can pick up the whole cylinder though.

marshall machinery in honesdale, pa will remanufacture rods for hydraulic cylinders. they have done 4 for me and have been very fair. i don't know if they would sell just the rod. fwiw

www.baileynet.com responded on the cost of the rod. 1.5" chrome plated rod sells today for $2.04 a foot and costs about $10 to ship it to Connecticut. This comes in a little more than my local hydraulics shop (about 20 miles away) which will sell the same stock for $17.04 a foot, plus a $10 cut fee to get the length one wants.
