Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me identify the model of this tractor. I have a few number from it. On the transmission area 8638DE, on the top of the motor 251172-R1, right below #1 cylinder on a flat raised spot, FCM 171690. If this is not enough info, let me know I will look for more numbers or even get a picture to send. Thanks in advance!!!

Is'nt a C the one that has the wheels in the center front of the tractor? Is there somewhere you can point us for pictures online, or could we send you a picture for definite identification?? Thanks again for the quick reply!! Any info you could get to us on this tractor would be so helpful. 6 or 12 volt? etc.....

Pretty sure with a six digit serial # on the motor it`s a Super C.From factory was 6 volt positive ground.Disk brakes. Could be bought as a narrow or wide front.Had optional fast hitch available mid year 1953.There should be a chassis serial number tag on right side of seat support. If its there yet and you can get the numbers, either post on the forum or look under the Research & Info on left side of this page and look under serial numbers and find out what year it was built.

Thanks again!! Those pictures aren't what we have either, and there is no serial # on the seat support. The wheels in front are not in the center of ours. It has a belly mower on it, not hydraulic, manual and hard to use. I am trying to find what it is because I am having starter problems. I need to know if its a 6 or a 12 volt and all the other important info. I will send some pictures tomorrow. Thanks and have a happy new year!

Mark: It is a farmall C with a Super C block and C head. I ran across this tractor on another forum, same numbers, different person.

If the main parts of the tractor are offset to the left, with a seat on the right, and rounded front sheetmetal and a teardrop shape to the fuel tank, and a front axle that is wide, but not centered, it is an A or super A.
It is almost certain to be 6 volt. If it has a generator.the generator will look like a 4" cylinder about 7 inches long. If it has an alternator (non stock) it will be larger in diameter, Made from aluminum, and not a cylinder. it will be 12 volt. If it has a battery in it, the 6v battery will have 3 fill holes on top for filling water. A 12 volt batery will have 6 fill holes for water.
Either way it will more than likely have a 6 volt starter (they work and survive on 12volts and are not changed) A problem that often happens with IH Farmall tractors is that the starter drive system jambs into the flywheel and stops working. THis is cured by replacing it with a newre design clutch type starter drive from CaseIH, or others that sell starter components. These starters can be rebuilt easily. Look to the left and select tractor photos to find your model. JimN

That housing # you posted is what starter bolts to. It was used on A and B tractors at least, maybe C. Does tractor have gear drop housings to rear axle, or do the axles come out side of transmission housing and wheels can be moved in or out on axle? Or does it have 36 inch rear tires or smaller diameter ones? If you could post a picture of starter someone could probably tell you whats needed.

Carsinslid or Carla or whoever you may be: This is the second forum you presented these same numbers, except at other forum you gave a block part number 354598 R2. We asked you to confirm if 354598 might have been 354898. You never did, nor did you confirm any possible discription of the tractor.

May I suggest the very first thing you do on your next post is quote the wheel base, give size of front and rear tires. Does the steering shaft run down left side of engine, right side of engine or along the top of the engine. Are the brake and clutch pedals relatively straight or curved? Does it have disc or band brakes? Answer ALL these questions and most anyone on this forum will know what you have.

Personally I think your pulling our leg, you could answered most of this 3 days ago.

Does it look like this?

John: Good point, may we suggest he go to Farmall Photo Gallery here at YT, type in and look at examples of each A, B, C, SA and SC. That failing he can go to H, SH, M, SM, W-4, SW-4, W-6, SW-6 W-9 and SW-9. Pardom me, I forgot the Cub.

For my part in this, too bad some of these guys wouldn't learn to answer all the questions they are asked. Oh well, I guess thay are satisfied with the type of help they desreve.

You mean folks that act like this?

"Oooh, oooh, I baught a twaktor. It has a enjin dat wun on gas, and big wheews and its wed and deres a numbah on da enjin bwok 1-2-W. Wat id it?"

Then you hear nothing from them again. I suppose they're expecting you to email them direct, or call them or something.

Thats my ole Pop on his 1950 C. He passed away Easter day 2008. It picked up my day seeing that photo of him again. Thanks Hal for the nice trip down some very good memories.

Your picture was the first one to show up when I did a search. I'm glad it brought back memories of your dad and on your birthday. Have a Happy New Year. Hal

Just so you know I never posted anything 3 days ago. The post I made last night was the first post I ever made on here. I can get those things for you but will have to wait for help from the hubby to make sure I get correct measurements. I can/will even send apicture if i can figureout how to do that. This is 354898 R2, on trans tube 8638 DE, Flat spot below #1 cyl 171690, top of motor 251172-R1, the steering wheel runs down the right side of the motor if you are sitting on it, has a tear drop shaped gas tank, the wheels on front are spread apart, not in the cente, the pedals are straight, it has a belly mower. The only thing I think I am missing here is the wheel measuerments, brakes

Almost gotta be an A,Super A or B with the steering shaft on the right side .The straight pedal description has me scratching my head, though.

Carsinslid: Much better, however 3 days ago a lady called Carla posted these same numbers on another forum I take part in, then never bothered to answer any questions that could narrow the tractor ID.

Right here you've done much better, steering shaft along right side of engine, plus the part numbers you are qouting narrows it down to A, B or Super A. Don't get carried away thinking you need photos. Is this mower lifted by hydraulics mounted below the fuel tank. When I said brake pedal curve I meant from side on. Tire sizes should be stamped in side of tires.

One other item does your tractor look like this. Look closely, I have some more questions.

Thanks everyone for your help, it was given to us, a man that just did not have the time to fool with it anymore. For all I know its an "I got her one piece at a time and did'nt cost me a dime" kinda thing that someone put together. We just wanted to locate a correct starter without spending 200 or 300 right now. How do I post pictures on here and I will post some.....
