I HAVE A RELATIVE THAT HAS SOME OLD FARMALLS ONE OF WICH IS A 400 WIDE FRONT. I TOLD HIM I WAS INTERESTED AND HE SAID I COULD HAVE IT IF I FIXED HIS BN FARMALL THAT RUNS BUT LOSES OIL PRESSURE. I KNOW IT IS HARD TO TELL AND I HAVE NOT LOOKED AT THE TRACTOR MYSELF BUT IF IT NEEDS A COMPLETE ENGINE REBUILD HOW EXPENSIVE AND HARD TO FIND ARE THE ENGINE PARTS.ANY COMMENTS ON THING THAT ARE COMMON WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
THANKS FRED

The oil pressure issue is probably just a simple near no cost repair of the oil pump end frame that gets warped and leaks. A pan gasket is needed. Pull the pan and oil pump (or just the cover from the pump) and flat sand it so that is seals. the gaskets are very thin, and used for shims. thin aluminum pop can can be cut to make new if needed. The clearance between the end gear and housing should be .0008" to .001" . It is a pretty common issue. There are no cam bearings in the engine, so the mains and rods are the only major repair for pressure loss from bearing wear. The oil pressure relief valve could also be sticking open, but I would check the pump end frame first. Fred with respect, turn off the caps function. It makes very difficult reading on some computers. (it is also considered shouting) JimN

Engine parts for a 400 are not hard to find at all. Any CaseIH dealer can get them, Lot's of good auto store can get them, and you can get them here from YT as well as many net places. Can cost from 500 to 1500+ depending on what needs to be done to it. Machine work adds up quick. In any event it is a good trade for you. The wide front is worth several hundred bucks or.

Email me if you like and I will give you some money saving tips may not cost much at all to get the 400 running.

Not uncommon for that engine to not show a lot of pressure when warm. I would replace the guage with one that reads lbs. I have found when replacing the guage it will read 10lbs or so when warm and thats plenty when the old original one didnt show hardly any pressure when warm.

thanks for the info. Sorry about the caps I have to use them for our computer program at work and I get used to them being on.

I had low oil pressure on my M once and I fixed the oil pump all that was wrong was that the oil guage was bad.
