Stuck BN's - Update #2

Hello All.

Balmy weather here today, so a good day to get out and tinker. However, spent it putting new brakes on the fathers pickup, so that took a good chunk of the daylight.

I drained the cylinders that had water in them on the one BN, and tried to clean the gunk out of them. Lots of sediment, dirt, etc. in the bottom of the cylinders, looks like its been sitting a while. Filled them up with ATF and will let them sit for a while.

I decided to see what the other one (supposedly in better shape) was going to do. I pulled the drain plug out, and must have gotten at least three quarts of water out of it :( All told I drained about two gallons out of the crankcase, with the last of it looking like some very funky oil. Not what I was hoping to find in there today. That one has been soaking a few days, and no movement at all on it. I figure its going to have to sit for quite some time to get it un-stuck.

So I guess the next warm day Ill have to tear into that one too and see what lies in wait for me, although now the cylinders are all full of ATF.

But Im still having fun, still learning plenty, lots more to go.

Years ago I took a BN apart that had a crankcase full of
water/funky oil as you described. Everything in the engine was
rusted beyond repair crank, cam, lifters, rocker assembly, pistons,
cylinders, etc. It quickly became a parts tractor for two other projects. I still have quite a few items left if you need anything for
a BN. Send me an email if I can be of any help. The main thing is
to have fun! Greg

Thanks for the offer Greg!

I need to pull apart the other BN (the one that I just drained yesterday) and see the extent of the damage before I figure out what to do next. If both are shot, then I will pull one apart and make a good one and have a parts one.

However, I do have a few things that I know Ill be missing from both of them, so you may hear from me in a few months. I dont see a way to shoot you an e-mail so if you can post it here or shoot me one ( clarkbug1 AT yahoo DOT com with the usual modifications) that would be great.

Im having fun so far, I was just disgusted yesterday to drain that much water out of what was the "good" engine. But then again I knew it going in that it had issues, so I shouldnt be too surprised. Now its just a matter of figuring out what to do next with either machine....

Hi Greg.

I dont see that option on the forums, but then again Im using the new style. Ill load up the old style ones, since I guess thats where that link is.

Ill dig some more, and you may hear from me yet!

Thanks again!
