Looking at a late 53 Super M, would it have been 6 volt from the factory?

Yes.....6 volt, positive ground from the factory

Yes-no non-diesel 12 volts until the the 460/560, etc.

CNKS, you forgot about part of 350, 450 gasoline probuction came 12 volt. 400 LP may have been the first non diesel 12 volt.

I hadn't forgotton, but before I posted I looked at the 450 in Guy Fay's data book -- it said 6 volt. So, now I looked at the 350, and Guy lists "12 volt conversion package" under attachments, thought I had seen documentation somewhere. The book does not include all the fine details though.
