Serial number confusion

I have a 1954 Farmall 300 serial # 987SJ, I was wondering how many were made in 54. According to the "Original Farmall Hundred Series" book there were only 4 made in 1954. How can that be right if the serial #"s start with 501 and mine is 987, wouldn"t that mean that mine was # 486 produced in "54. The last serial # for 54"s was 3359 meaning there was a total of 2858 produced in 54, right?

goatboy: Go to the left of this page, under Research & Info. I expect you'll find the 2,858 figure is correct or at least close. I never heard tell of that book you refer to. I can tell you there have been a lot of books written with mistakes.

Probably a misprint, if you look above that is shows 1954 serial numbers run 501 to 3359. That doesn't necessarily mean all serial numbers in between left the factory. Lot more than 4 though.
Yours was produced in nov. 54.

Yes, I checked this sight also. According to it there were 1278 Farmall 300's produced in 1954. I am not to sure about this book, I am finding the same problems on the 400's. The book was written by Guy Fay and Andy Kraushaar. I hope it was not a waste of $30.00?

It's a good book -- Guy will be the first to tell you that the actual numbers sold do not necessarily match the serial numbers. The 4 is a misprint, though. Having written several peer reviewed journal articles when I was employed as an agronmist by Kansas State University I found that eliminating all mistakes, even when 3 or 4 other people review it is next to impossible. You can trust Guy's info to be as accurate as anyone can make it, along with a few typos, unlike several other "authors", who have data from unreliable sources. Guy's numbers come from extensive research of the actual IH files.
