Paint recommendations for M

I just aquired an "M" and want to start restoring. What paint would you recommend?
Next question...What are drawbacks on 8-volt system? Would you change it to a 12 volt system?
Please advise. Thanks
 
I use Dura-Shield IH Red #4205 and I like it. It is made by Van Sickle paint company. I think IH 2150 paint is very close to the original IH #50 red. I like the #4205 best.
 
The PPG Omni paint #71310 is close. There's a man in Ohio that uses Martin Senour Crossfire paint on tractors. Here's a pic of one tractor he did a few years ago. It needed a lot of mechanical repair before it was painted. Hal

properly maintained, the 6v system works fine. most generators can be rebuilt for under a hundred dollars. i personally think the 12v is a little hard on starters.
regarding paint, it is going to depend on your budget, longevity of the paint type, and skill level as to what type paint you choose. least expensive will be the farm and fleet alkyd industrial enamels, 25-30 dollars a gallon,to the modifyed alkyd enamels from case i-h, crossfire urethane single stage from napa, around 200 a gallon, into highline base/clear urethane's ppg, basf, glasurit, ect on the 650/gallon range. plus reducers, hardeners, primers, ect.... see the paint and body forum archives, lots of discusions there regarding painting.
 
Visit your local Case-IH dealer and get the IH 2150 red rouge. It is very good quality paint and leaves a nice shiny finish, and won't cost much more than the Van-sickle stuff from your local farm store.

12 volt conversions are over-rated. If the 6 volt system is functional, leave it alone.
 
In my world, paint is the last step in "restoring". What is the mechanical condition of the tractor ??
8 volts; sometimes hard to find a battery, sometimes hard to get the charge rate up.
A WELL MAINTAINED 6 volt system should be sufficient for most needs.
 
IF you like pink trators, buy the Van Sickle. I have a couple in IH paint, and a couple in PPG, one in Van Sickle. The one in VS is only 4 years old has started to turn pink. 12 volt for me is just simpler, and easier to find 12 volt batteries here. 6 volt are nearly twice as high.
