brought international 544 hydro diesel allmost impossiable to start seems to turn over slow unsure if starter motor is the ploblem or the fuel enrichment valve is set wrong any idea"s thanks tom

First thing I would do is check the battery to make sure its good for sure. If that don't work check the starter out. Had a tractor I picked up and it was real slow cranking. Had the starter rebuilt and it was fine after that. So gunked up it wouldn't turn. A lot of people seem to over look this especially on a 6 volt tractor. they right away want to jump to 12 volt to solve the problem, but mean while the starter is the only problem and the 6 volt system is fine

Tom, give us a little more information. How cold is it where you are? Does it have glow plugs? Are they working? Diesel engines pull a lot of cranking amps. In what condition are the batteries? Are they rated for high cranking amps? Battery cables have to be clean and in good condition with no bolt on end clamps. Once cranked and warm is it easy to crank and does it run well? Larry M

Tom: Diesels must crank fast to start well. Three things are a must. Batteries have to be good and heavy enough for the job. Battery cables must be 00 gauge. Finally the starter must be in good condition. A 544 diesel requires two batteries. I forget the combined cranking amps, however the manual should tell you. Put it this way, each battery should be pushing 40 lbs.

Hi Tom, 544D has D239 German Diesel same as 674 and 684 models. The D239 will start down to about 20F any colder requires block heater. As Hugh says Diesel engines have to spin fast to start. I am not fimiliar with Hydros but is there a cold start disconnect from the Hydro pump to allow engine to spin faster in cold weather?

After reading this site, I put on new cables yesterday before buying a new battery. Difference was like night and day. That old battery spun the starter like it never spun before. Now I can wait on buying a battery.

I didn't believe cables would make that big a difference. My 2606 C263 gasser had 4 guage cables that appeared to be in good shape and not that old. Bought the biggest they had at autozone (2 guage for about 8 bucks apiece).

Like they said, your six volt needs bigger guage. If autozone had them or if I went to napa first, I'd probably bought the double ought.

Of course avoid what I did, when tightening the cable on the starter solonoid, it rotated over and touched the little terminal next to it at the top. When I hooked up the second battery cable, what a surprise when the starter engaged. Good thing I keep it out of gear as I was standing in front of the back wheel.
