986 transmission

My brother went out to push snow with the 986 the other day and while he was using it the trans started making a grinding noise (like metal to metal) all the time even in park and 1st and 2nd gear didn't work in any range or reverse. But the noise would go away if you pushed the clutch in. The other day dad tried it and no noise at any time and it would work in 1 and 2 but not in 3 and 4 in any range or in reverse, then it would work in 3 and 4 but not in 1 and 2 in any range or in reverse. The noise I'm sure just didn't disappear. Any thoughts?

pull the speed and range covers off and look. Maybe a broken or loose shift fork, probably find something wrong.
