Farmall 400 misses and backfires

I just picked up a 1954 Farmall 400. I brought it Home on a flat bed. In order to get it started, I had to re-connect the spark plug wires in the correct firing order. After starting, the 400 runs rough rough, misses, backfires and has low power. I noticed the inside of the distributor cap was wet and oily. I assume there must be a seal or bushing on the shaft that needs to be replaced. However, I haven't been able to locate one on-line. Would the local IH-Case dealer have one or should I pony up for a rebuilt distributor? Thanks for your help.

if it's oily inside the distributor cap the hydraulic pump seal is leaking. anything that you do to the dributor won't help your problem.

Okay, so the seal I need to change is actually in the hydraulic pump? Thanks, that should get me going in the right direction.

Pretty sure, went by the firing order stamped on the engine. It wouldn't start at all until I switched the plug wires. The guy I bought it from (my ex-brother in-law) had a habit of switching the plug wires. Not sure why. But anyways, the distributor cap did have oil in it as well.

If you "went by" the way the numbers are cast int othe block, then they are on wrong. #1 is the front plug. But I agree, you need to change the seals on the pump.

I just cleaned up a distributor off of a super M there was an oring seal in the housing that I got at local IH dealer also the pipe plug on the side of the distributor it supposed to removed once a year ,install zerk fitting and give 1 to 2 pumps of grease to keep shaft lubed I have seen several distributors that the shaft was completely worn out , probably had never been greased since left factory

For what it's worth, I pulled the distributor and disassembled it. Found the O-ring, will replace that. There was no pipe plug or grease fitting, just an empty threaded socket!

Also, when I pulled the plugs, it had two different sets, two Champion D-9 and two RJ18y. Oh well.

Thanks
Fred
