Super H won't stay in 5th gear

The shifter forks or worn and/or the splines on the direct drive shaft are worn. Many posts in the archives about this.

If ya'll figure it out, let me know, I have an H that does the same thing, I am thinking a gear is worn a little, but so far, too lazy to take top off and find out.

thanks, as I said, I admit, too lazy to look today. To cold for my brain to work right.

I have the trans cover off Dad's 1944 H now. The constant mesh gear and drive gears have broken teeth. Does not look too hard to work in the transmission.

I fixed a friend's Super H a few years back that had this problem. The problem with his was that the internal spline teeth on the 4th/5th sliding gear in the transmission were worn out. It was more than $200 just for the new gear. This wear happens because folks start out in 4th gear and then shift to 5th on the go, grinding the gears. Over time, and many shifts, this wears out the teeth on the 4th/5th sliding gear. It may be possible to replace this gear through the belt pulley housing opening after you pull the housing off. Not sure about that as I took the transmission top off on the one I did. Also, the clutch shaft has to come out and the input shaft/bearings/gear to the transmission has to come out the front of the transmission. That is done from under the tractor. In the case of my tractor, it ended up with a pretty complete overhaul of the transmission, including replacing all the bearings except for the rear bearing on the counter shaft. This was done because all the bearings had excessive play. The transmission lube system was all stopped up with sludge preventing proper flow of oil to the bearings. Another possible cause (I am told) for this problem is a worn out pilot bearing in the transmission. This is the bearing between the front and rear top shafts in the transmission. This I think can be replaced through the belt pulley housing hole without removing the top of the transmission, but all the stuff still has to come out of the front of the transmission. Short answer is fixing your problem is a fairly big job and will be expensive as well.

Same problem with my 46H Pulled the top plate off after welding up the shaft didn"t work. Gears are in good shape but the bearing that held that assembly was worn and allowed the assembly to drop down on the back end. 5th gear fork was also bent. Replaced just the bearing and re-adjusted the fork and it works fine now.

We had a 560 that wouldn't stay in 5th like that. Dad bent the 5th gear shifter fork and all was well with it after that.

I need him to do the same thing on my Super H because that won't stay in 5th either...

My 1952 "H" had the same problem back in the 60's, when I was in high school. My Dad got the new sliding 4th/5th gear, and I took the top cover off the transmission and replaced the gear. Haven't had a problem with it in the last 40 years. When I had it apart, I did notice that the bolt holding the Bull gear on the right axle was very loose. Worth checking out everything when it is apart so you don't have problems later.

Neighbor had me replace the 4-5 gears also, never drove the tractor myself. Before we put the top cover on I checked the detents. Sure enough the spring was broke for 5th. Check yours while apart. chris
