M-questions

Hi Folks,

I have an M over here and have some questions.
Since I had an 100% overhaul of the rear end and everything went out I have a chance I changed the bull gears.I didn't marked them. They seem to be the same.Is this bad or is it possible they will wine?
Second are the bull gears reversible inside out:will they fit on one way on the axle?

Is the gap between pinion and bevel gear noticable with your hand when you turn pinion and move bevelgear.I know there has to be some distance and free space but I guess maybe its too tight.
What are particular places to look for cracks in/on the head? Not any I can see but inside isn't easy to check. Its an 6336 DA head.

Has anyone an undented M hood around.Mine is rather worn but maybe someone can help me with it?

Thanks and Merry Christmas Happy New Year!

Look at the wear patterns on the bull gear teeth. One side will be shinier than the other. The shiny (or wear) side should be visible on the upper part of the gear if you're standing behind the PTO shaft.

The bull gear spline can fit either way on the axle. But if you have them wrong, the teeth won't be aligned with the teeth on the brake pinion shaft. The flatter side of the bull gear goes toward the axle housing.

Some gap is necessary for the bevel gears. I can't recall exactly what the backlash spec is (.012" comes to mind) but if you can't get a .010" feeler gage between the teeth at the contact point, they're too close. If you have more than .025" there is too much backlash.

Head cracks can be anywhere. Even if it doesn't leak coolant, you can still have a crack. They mostly appear around the combustion chambers. The only way to know for certain is to have the head magnafluxed. It will have to be off the engine for this.
