Starter for 1936 Farmall F12

I would like to put electric start on a Farmall F12 without butchering it so it can"t be put back easily to original. I think I seen one years ago with a flywheel and a starter rigged up on the pto. The tactor generally starts easy but I have had major right hand surgery. Any ideas?

Also looking for a gray color for same tractor. My dad once said that 3 quarts of one color and 1 quart of another were mixed together to create the McCormick 1020 color. I can't remember what colors were mixed together. Is the 10-20 gray color the same as the F12 gray?

Wayne,I put a starter on my F14 but I found a Flywheel and bellhousing and I used a starter off of a W4.Gordon rice has the proper color gray for the F series

Could a person rig up one of those gen./starters from an old Kolher engine like the old Cub cadets and JD garden tractors used?Just a thought.John.

James has the best solution. As long as you keep the original parts with the tractor it can always be put back to original condition. Besides who would ever take the starter off? In my opinion it will be worth more with the conversion. Its not like its a rare collectible that should be kept as the Factory made it. Good luck.

I've seen this kind of setup on a few tractors.

Starter/gen from Kohler from Cub? Not that size but a larger size from industrial engine setup that copied original Dodge car starter. Have to search archives for further info- think it might have been on F-20. Was supposed to have been on continental flathead. Model T club may have some info on where it was made: Leece-Neville comes to mind? RN

The guy called Fawteen on Tales has done that conversion on his (what else) F14 which is substantially similar to your F-12. He got parts from a source on this website. You could search for the thread, or just ask him on Tales.

Actually, that's not quite right. I got the parts from a guy that hangs out on Tales. It's a farmer and/or machineshop built conversion of a stock non-electric bellhousing and flywheel plus various original F12/F14 conversion parts. Scroll to the bottom of the link for pix.

I read awhile back where someone used one of the old starters with no snout on them. They removed bendix and adapted to pto shaft made a bracket for starter that would reach to the drawbar then jumped it off something else. when started starter slid off pto shaft and was put away till next time. Some of the older cars used that type starter. The bendix was backwords on them.

If you want a least intrusive plan, buy a 3/4 inch low speed electric drill. make a bracket attached permanently to the drill that positively locks it from turning on the front bolster (cw or ccw) then make a crank bit to fit the snout. We started several auxillary engines (wisconsin V4s, and cub power units with a 1/2" Mall drill, and a 4 foot pipe screwed into it. (not recommended W/O rotational limits for kick back. JimN

in 1936 it can be red or grey.supposedly before nov. 01, 1936 they were grey.for the exact grey go to mccormick deering .com. they have the exact paint formula. the others are just close matches.thats why at shows you see diff. shades of grey.
