706 lost its power steering

..... i started it up like 2 weeks ago pulled it outside let it run for awhile then went to put it away had no power steering.. then tried it 2 days after that and had it plowed snow for like 2 hours then last night i started it went to plow snow had nothing.... my 3pt arms work and hy trans level is full.... any ideas????

Sounds like it could be a bad mcv pump, Thats the pump that supplies hydraulics for your power steering, brakes, and T.A. .

Try letting it warm up for 20 minutes or so then work the steering wheel back and forth for 5 or so minutes.
In extreme cold those old girls could not get the warm oil upto the steering pump, this works if that is the problem.

And ice in the oil.

Had a 656 one time that I ended up changing the fluid 3 times before I finally got it all cleaned up.

That Hytran "absorbs" the moisture. Then when it gets good and cold, it freezes and won't pass thru the filter.

Common as an old shoe on IH tractors.

YEAH I REPLACED THE OIL LAST YEAR I AHVE HAD THIS TRACTOR AWHILE AND THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR IT EVER DID THIS.... BUT I DIDN'T CHANGE THE FILTER SO HOPING THATS WAHT IT WAS NOT A PUMP THAT CAN'T BE CHEAP

Problem with changing the oil is that you also have a few gallons of fluid in the rockshaft housing up under the seat. You can pull the seat and cover to clean the oil and sludge out of that. Between that and all the fluid in the hoses and cylinders, it's almost impossible to clear the water out of the fluid. Then, unless you live in the desert, it will absorb more water over time through condensation.

At $150 a pop, more or less, for a fluid change, you will probably have to live with some what of a milky fluid.

I've had intermittant power steering too. Not sure of the problem although cold temps makes it worse.

It may help and you probably should run it with an extra 5 gal of hytran over the full line.

I've found that it helps on my old IHs like this to put male couplers on both ends of an old hose and hook to one valve and lock the lever on while it warms up. Its helped on a couple of my neighbors tractors too. Lee

It has 2 hydralic pumps on it on the left side, but if the only thing you lost was the steering I would seriously doubt that it is a pump.
The 66 series had this problem too but not as bad after they changed the front end and did away with the Narrow front steering system.
Been awhile since I did a pump but off memory I believe they are around $650 for the pair and all the gaskets.
steering,TA and brakes all run off of one pump and that pump also feeds the other pump.
