Super A governor update

I checked the calibration of gov to carb and it was right on so I tore into the governor. Moisture was in there, the surge bump spring was deterioated, that explanes why it would hunt for the right RPM at times. The ball thrust bearing fell apart when I took it off. The big spring was OK. It is a simple thing. I will rebuild as soon as I get parts.

What should I put in the case when finished? Oil, 90wt? How much should I put it.

Thanks

Ron

Ron: The items you listed usually cure these. You don't need to add lubricant, the governors are lubricated by timing gears with crankcase oil. It's 20 years since I did governors on my SA and 130, still both working well, so I must be right. 20 years ago I had no one to ask, however when I took mine apart everything happened as you describe, even the bearing falling apart.

If the lever that hooks to the throtle is sloppy mite want to rebush the gov housing. I put the housing on the milling machine making the hole 5/8 then pressing a new 1/2x5/8 brass bushing this will take out the wiggle and make the throttle response like new. Lower and other places have the brass bushings they will need a small amount removed as they are just a little longer than needed.

Ron, good job! As Gene recommends, you will want to check your bearings and bushings for clearance, rust, etc. I had to replace the shaft and the weight pins too. Check the replaceable bumpers that are pushed/pressed into the housing too, they are wear points. Don't forget the bushing in the block! After I cleaned my housing in parts cleaner, I applied a new coat of glyptal to prevent the housing from rusting. Good to go for another 60 years!
