A guy wants two 656's Farmalls painted. What color of red were used on them? Hope there is not to many oil leaks to make a paint job look crappy. They both were new in 1966. Have not ask how detailed of a job he wents, but they are still used everyday for farming. Thanks

2150 is the paint code, however the current version of 2150 has an orange tint to it that was not originally on the tractor -- probably due to reformulation because of enviornmental regulations.

CNKS, I have notice you make this comment several times in the past. My project is a Super H and I am probably a year away from paint. How noticible is this tint issue? Will the average person notice it or only the purist?

Thanks, Gene

Oh, is there another brand paint that more closely matches the old girls original?

Thanks again, Gene

Some people notice it, some don't. It seems to get a little redder with time. Some say to put it in the sun for a few days. I have only compared it with PPG 71310, the 2150 equivalent, far as I can tell they are identical. I have not painted a whole tractor with 2150, as I purchased it to try to match PPG's version to it, they turned out to be the same. The DuPont code is 96766, I believe, I have not used it, nor have I used the NAPA/Martin Senour/Sherwin Williams version (all three are the same). On the tractor I am currently working on, I had the PPG dealer change the toners in the mixing process -- more red for less orange. I didn't quite get all the orange out. It is my opinion (unproven) that regardless of the brand, the original colors do not exist anymore. I have an idea (also unproven) of what that red should look like -- but until I paint another one, I haven't seen it yet. SO, what is "correct" is a matter of opinion. You may be totally satisfied with the way 2150 looks -- I have sort of gotten used to it.

I repainted a 560D last spring and I used the 2150 IH paint I slso thought it had a little orange tint but I thought it was just. Glad to know I am not the only one feeling that way but I have gotten used to it after seeing it everyday I dont think the sun helped mine at all. Thanks Mic

IH 2150. I use PPG because I don't have a shed and PPG holds up in the weather. I've heard comments on the "orange" color, but I once bought an original engine cover plate for my 544 from Case/IH that matched the PPG perfectly. After a few months in the weather, the PPG paint was still the same color but the engine cover had weathered to a deeper red. That tells me that the "orange" color is closer to original.

Could be, but my understanding is the forumlation changes that took place a few years ago resulted in a different shade. I did no painting before 2001, and was away from IH for 40+ years (so what do I know?) so I can't say what IH 2150 and the PPG equivalent, 71310 looked like prior to that. Depending on when you bought the cover, the 2150 was probably alkyd enamel. The 71310 you used was likely either acrylic enamel or acrylic urethane. Alkyd enamel changes color faster than PPG because it does not contain UV inhibitors (the reason you used PPG to begin with). The later 2150 is supposedly an "acrylic modified" alkyd enamel that does contain UV inhibitors, but it probably will still fade more than acrylic enamel or acrylic urethane. As you say, IH 2150 and PPG 71310 are virtually identical in color, originally.
