How can I tell if I have a gen or an alt?
Looks like a volt reg sitting on top of it.

My amp meter "seems" to have decided to work but I don"t trust it. Can I run my own amp meter from the starter side of the starter switch to ground to compare to the tractors meter?

My light switch has L, R, B, D on it. B is low beam, D is high beam, front and rear lights come on in both positions. When on L no lights, 2 amps. When on R no lights, 18 amps. What is going on here? What does L and R mean?

Thank you in advance.

If there is a square box sitting on top, it is a generator, 6 volt. Don"t run an amp meter to ground, the large wire from the generator goes to one post of the amp meter and a wire from the other post goes to the hot side of the starter switch.

L stands for low charge, the R is actually an H, it means high charge, the lights are not supposed to be on when the switch is in the L or H position. When you turn it to the B or D position then the lights come on. From what you say, it sounds like everything is working correctly.

A four position light switch should have H L D B (Hi-Charge, Low-Charge, Dim-Lights, Bright-Lights) positions, a 3 should have O D B (Off - Dim - Bright). A generator looks similar to the body of the starter, has a pulley on it and a voltage reguator or cut-out mounted on top the generator. On a H, if yo had a alternator, the hood is most likely cut out so it can fit.

First position is lo or regular charge second position is hi-charge third position is low beam for the lites and last position is bright lites. Sounds like yours is working correct just leave it alone and enjoy.

Would love to take your advice but the battery almost always is low on charge the next day. The extreme cold weather we"ve been having complicates things.
