300 utility problem

while plowing snow this weekend my 1956 300 utility died while about 30 minutes into snow plowing. when it died, it seemed as if i was losing a bit of power then died. i then heard the sound of what could have been the starter motor engaged but surely some sort of a elec. motor sound running. last week the motor was popping a bit and backfiring out the muffler so before the storm i pulled the plugs and cleaned them and also pulled the distributor cap and saw the rotor had some crud on it so i cleaned it off.i thought i was fine because the backfiring was gone but it died anyway. does any of this make sense to any one. my tractor is the 4 cyl. gas model. thank you for any help.

Did you notice if the gen was operating while plowing.
Did the noise continue until you turned the key off.
Did the noise return at turning the key on.
Does gas run freely from the carb supply line.
Tap LIGHTLY on the carb housing then try starting.
Check ALL coil wires.
Check distributor wire.
Disconnet carb air intake hose and try starting.
Try small amount of starting fluid to see if it will fire.

when i turned off the key the elec motor sound kept running. i disconnected the pos. terminal to stop the sound. when i recconnected the pos. terminal the sound ran till the battery died. i jump started it and continued working. i will check all you mentioned in your reply. thank you.

If it has a soliniod it could be sticking and the starter may still spin and will burn its self out if that has happened. As to the engine loosing power that sounds like you may have a bad coil

If the wiring or an electrical fault allowed the starter to continue to run, the battery would soon be drained, and the ignition system would then stop operating from lack of electricity. A stuck start button, or bad Starter relay (that film can looking thing on the side of the starter) pulling the small wire off of that relay will stop the starter from turning if the relay is good. (it also tells you the button is stuck if pulling it stops the starter!. If you nare not friendly with the terms mentioned get some help from someone. destroying a starter motor is costly, and seems to be the main problem to me. JimN

Reconnect battery and if sound begins, put your hand on the starter and feel if it is vibrating. The starter is on the left side just infront of and above your clutch pedal.

Follow the advice given in the other post for trouble shooting starter relay. If not familiar, get some help.
