Farmall 140 hydraulics

I have a Farmall 140 that we are restoring at the High school, and I need help with the hydraulics.
Is there a stick or a plug that you would pull to check the hydraulics?
Where would you add hydraulic fluid if lift will not raise? Since it raised only halfway then went to the ground and we could not get it to lift back.

The hydraulic resevoir is under the gas tank. The filler plug is a 1 1/8" hex plug on the port (left side facing forward) side of the resevoir. You fill it to a half inch below the opening (bottom). Leave plug off and cycle levers to work air out.

You really need a manual to be doing what you are doing.

Apparently I used "swear words" or something in my last reply, and this site rejected it. Said, "use the back button" which blew away everything I typed... I did not use any bad language, punctuation, or words that I have not seen on this site many times before...

No tractor mechanic worth his salt will ever stumble blindly into an unfamiliar tractor with no reference material. You need the service manual and owner's manual at the very least. They're as invaluable and necessary as a set of SAE combination wrenches.

Reprints are available from many sources online. Maybe the website barfed on my references before, so let's try "binder books dot com" (with no space). See if the owner of the tractor or the shop teacher will pony up for the manuals. You can't put a price on the information you'll learn from these.

You will especially want the Touch Control service manual. That one's online. Probably not a legal copy, but nobody's bothered them yet. Look for a link to the "Cub Manual Server" at "farmall cub dot com" (again with no spaces).

Ag Man: Since you are restoring this tractor, you best get a few manuals. The hydraulic unit may need a rebuild kit, probably a bit over $100., and you need a manual to install it.

The current problem could be as simple as low oil or a dirty screen. The screen is on left side about 4" from battery. 4 small studs hold it in place, on a plate with round center 1.5" in diameter and recessed about 1/2". Nowlans indicated how to fill and check oil.
