Some simple H questions

I inherited my Dad's farmall H. The early kind, which shipped with steel wheels during the war. He inherited from his father, the original owner.
I changed the oil for the first time this fall, and used SAE 30 weight and it seems stiffer than how it used to be. I wonder if Dad used 10 W 30.
Is there a way to heat up the engine similar to a block heater for winter use?
One more, I put his old loader/snowplow back on it, and the right cylinder drops before the left one. There are two fittings on the left side. I connected to the one nearer to the operator's seat. There is only one fitting on the right side. These are single acting cylinders. Should I have connected to the forward fitting on the left side? Is one a return?

The ports are all pressure. For your purposes it doesn't matter which one you use. SAE 30 is fine, unless it is consistently below 32 degrees, if so use 10W-30 or 15W-40. Multi-viscosity oils did not exist when your tractor was built. You can also use SAE 30 in the hydraulics, some say to use non-detergent in the hydraulics to prevent foaming -- I always used detergent in our H in the 50's with no problems, though.
 
You should use the front hyd port on the double side and the one on the other side for same action. The one closest to the operator is for delayed action as to let the rear cultivators down last.
 
I misread his post, didn't notice he had two cylinders (a loader would have to have two)-- in that case he should use the two front ones, although they may not lift or lower at exactly the same speed either. Usually the rear port needs a delay valve in it to work properly with front and rear cultivators, but the valve usually did not work for me. Actually, without the valve, if I remember 50 years ago, the rear sometimes came up first.
 
HEAT - I used a small tin flange, a piece of tarp and an $8 hair dryer.
I made a basket of the tarp with the dryer pointing up at the bottom and hung it with S hooks under the oil pan. In about 20 minutes it starts every time.

HYDRAULICS - I only used the single on my H. My neighbor had an H and M with loaders. He used a splitter on one port to run a line to each cylinder from one port. He used it that way for years. Using two ports you are always going to have at least a slight pressure difference. I wouldn't change it unless it is really bothersome.
 
A tank type heater works great on these. I use the block drain plug behind the carburetor to go in the bottom of the heater, and the top part of the heater can connect to a T fitting on the head where the temp sensor goes.

Use the two front ports for hydraulics. The rear is a delayed one.
 
Not exactly steve, it is only delayed if you use the optional IH delay valve. All of the ports are fed from the same place in the pump housing.
 

My loader is piped out of one port. I think the (as you are sitting on it) right side front most port. I get exactly the same lift out of both cylinders that way.

Ive got a buddy who uses a magnetic heater.It sticks to the bottom of the oil pan and he plugs it in.He uses it for his D 19 GAS and feeds all winter that way,and I would think the oil pressure would come up a little quicker with warm oil too.
