I worked with my 140 for about an hour yesterday. when returnig to the shed it started to sputter. and lost power. today when I started it,it only would sputter. Its getting gas at carb. I also pulled the plugs they are dry and black. any ideas thanks Bill

Are you getting any fire to the sparkplugs? Pull off one of the plug wires while someone makes an attempt to start the engine. If there's no fire
you need to rub the points with some 320 wet or dry. If they're burnt replace them. Install a new condenser too. If this doesn't help you may have a weak coil. I would install a new set of plugs too. If you have a distributor you need to
see if you're getting battery voltage to the coil. With the points open and with the ignition switch on you should have battery voltage on both small terminals. You need a fully charged battery
and the alternator or generator working to keep the battery charged. That's required when you have a distributor. Hal

it runs but back fires and sputters I will check these items tomorrow that you suggested Bill

I've had a 140 since new in 1966. When that happens, I first swap in a known good cap and rotor. (I usually save a set from the last tune-up). For some reason, they like to die this time of year. If it has been a while, put new ones in. If that doesn't do it, then go to points, coil, condenser etc.I am pretty sure condensation has something to do with it.

Carboned plugs indicates overfueling of course. This time of year, carb icing could be at fault. Also check the air filtration system. I believe it has an oil bath air cleaner--check the cup for dirt or ice.

I installed a new set of points and a condenser. runs great now. THANK YOU EVERY ONE FOR ALL YOUR HELP.
