Replacing cutout with regulator

History: Lots of family members us the 45 H and it seems that they can't gauge how long to leave on high charge and when to switch to low charge.Resulting in a over charged batter or a under charged batter.

So I decided to installed a 3 Terminal voltage regulator in place of the cut out.

I got it wired up correctly and it charges at about 4 amps thru out the rpm range. but when I turn the lights on it drops to negative. I can ground the field and it will show a charge. It appears the regulator might not be doing it's job? I know the generator will put out 20+ amps at full throttle.

If the amp meter is showing -2 amps with the lights on at idle should it not show a slight positive chage when I rev up the motor???

Any idea's or adjustments??

thanks

Three quick checks to make. The third brush in the gen may be set too far from the regular brush. Adjust it as close as possible. (can be done from outside) without removal.
The second is to be sure the new VR is grounded well. A third factor might be remaining connections to the light switch. Remove all these, only a single wire needs to be connected to the F terminal from the VR Field terminal. JimN

JimN's advice below is right on. A couple more comments:

If everything is working right the ammeter should show about 15 amps of charge at full RPM immediately after startup. It should then taper to 3 - 5 amps at full RPM as the battery reaches full charge. And with the lights on it should show 3 - 5 amps at max RPM.

If you ground the generator field terminal then get ammeter readings as above, it says the problem is with the regulator....either a poor ground or the regulator itself is not working right.
