More Power for My IH 1586? What to Do.

I have a 1586 with the DT436 Turbo. It has close to 160hp. I would like to get more out of it. I haven't turned it up at all. How much power can I get out of turning it up. Is there any other power adders? And would it be worth it to do a twin turbo setup? Thanks Jesse Kasper

I worked at a Ih dealer when 1586s were new. The inside axle bearings would fail and often the crankshafts would spin a main bearing. When they were turned up.

A mechanic friend of mine said you could replace some rear end bearings in the 15s with bearings from a 2+2 and make them pretty bullet proof, he had a 1566 of his own and it was intercooled and turned up so he probably had some experience. A 1586 they worked on they had to be overhauled anyway so they bought a 466 overhaul kit and traded cranks and made it a 466. This plus an inline pump made a lot of horse power. Also on my 1486 he didn't turn up the fuel any, but he changed what I think he called the droop screw in the pump which made the torque curve different. It made it a lot better when taking off again after throttling down for a ditch when discing. But you need to watch the pyrometer a little closer. Lee

I had a 1566, with the pump turned up all the way open stock turbo dynoed 290 hp on the pto.I did this for a tractor pull only.Normaly ran it at 180 to 200.If I still had it I would put the new style hycapacity turbo on it.

Jesse: You don't say what you need this extra hp for. I suppose if it's tractor pulling it might be worth it, very little rear end heat build up doing that.

Now, if your going to pull tillage equipment 16 hours per day, or 24-7 like I used to do, go buy yourself an articulated. You start pushing that 30 year old 1586 long days up around 200 hp, you'll have rear end parts passing the space shuttle on it's way to the space station.

If it is not broke do not fix it. Leave it alone, 4 years ago I put ring and pinion in a 1466 for fella who always played with the pump.Well $2500 later plus lots of labor it went back to the field set at about 160 horsepower. Scott

We had ours turned WAY up for the chopper with no trouble. But we still only pulled the tillage equipment that it pulled set stock, and didn't weight it any heavier. It will last longer than a 2+2 cranking that hard.
I beleive the 466 had a different cylinder head, swapping the head (and the injector lines) should increase your power through better airflow, and helps with the EGT if you go into the pump.
Our 1066 was built to be a puller and when the Deere dealer put the last t/a in for us their dyno operator cut the dyno out at 170 hp, the governor hadn't kicked the fuel to it yet, and any dummy off the street would have known when that happened. We think that the previous owner decked the block and supposedly the turbo had 436 or 466 wheels in it. Fuel use with it was similar to the stock 10 we had.
