Installing points in H4? Magneto

I am trying to put points in my MD and have never done so before. any help is appreciated to how to properly do this is what I am looking for. Not want to be bashed for not knowing how to do this just want some good advice and how to install and adjust them. The kit I purchased from CNH had a condenser and bracket, I do not see these pieces inside of the mag where the points are. Can get pics of my progress if that helps.

The points and condenser are under the flat plate there after you take the cap off. Just loosen the screw for the points then remove the other screw the points will come right out becareful not to drop the screws and the same for the condenser the bolt will have to be loosened then slip out the wire and replace all in reverse of the removal with the points on the top of the cam lobe in distributor set at twenty thousandths will be fine snap plate and cap back on with rotor cap and start it up. It is not needed to remove the plug wires. For more info get an ITT book from TSC or this site here for the tractor your working on will give point gap and all specs for tractor. Good luck

You need to remove the mag from the tractor as the condensor is removed from the back side. There should be a cover where the condensor sllides out. There is also a screw holding the condensor. You will also need to remove the threaded piece where the kill sw goes. Remove that fitting first as the screw with the bracket holding the condensor will hold the cond to unthread the fitting. The three screws will jold the end so you can get to the points. Dont remove the outer cover as you will get the rotor out of time. Set the pts a 13thous. I would get someone to help that has done it before or you can end up with a mess. Just remember where the rotor was pointed when you remove the mag.

Unless it is a different mag than on our MD I never pulled the mag to get the points or condenser out. Did it just like I described for 15years on that mag.

I think it is the H4 I see the points and cam the condenser must be on the back side as I cannot see it now. I was told once by my grandfather (who worked for an IH dealer) to set the point gap with a matchbook and I will never have any troubles. Is this correct?

So how did you remove the condensor without removing the back plate as the condensor will not slide back without removing the plate. You can even remove the wires without sliding the condensor back.

Here's a link to the genuine IH Blue Ribbon Service manual for Magnetos. It won't work as a "hotlink"... you'll have to "cut and paste" it into your browser.

The breaker points are covered on Pages 41,42, and 43.
