Winter weather is on us

We must've gotten about a foot here since Friday morning.

To listen to the news and weather reports all day Thursday and into early Friday, you would've thought the world was going to end!!! Watched the school closings pile up on the TV early Friday, looked out the window... nothing!

When I was a kid, a mere 25 years ago, weather like we're having would've been business as usual. We would've went to school, put in a full day, and gotten home on time. Weather people used to call this a "flurry." There was no closing school because some meteorologist said a storm was coming... and we used to get "storms" like this 2 or 3 times a month.

They even gave us the option to leave work early Friday afternoon. First time in 4-1/2 years, and we've had way worse weather, heavier snowfalls.

Are people just getting wimpy and/or lazy?

Maybe it's just everyone wanting to start Christmas vacation a little early, and the "storm" gave them a good excuse...

Thanks for the snow, and I'm sure you will send some below zero weather right along with it. We had about a foot on the ground untill last weekends rain, made for a nice layer of glare ice which was quickly covered by more snow. We are back up to a foot on the ground and it's snowing now. When I was a kid there was no such thing as school closing because of weather, everyone had to get up extra early, shovel themselves out, put the tire chains on and go for it. ( wouldnt do it now if you paid me, we are getting soft )

You and I must be about the same age. I too remember going to school when things were pretty bad. I remember getting to school times and turning around and going home an hour or two later because things got worse than what they thought. I also remember buses getting stuck in the snow and waiting quite a while for help. Some kids got pretty cold walking a quarter mile to a house after the bus got ditched. Nobody thought a lot about it back then. Today someone would sue the school district if there little angel got stuck in the snow and took a chill. Same goes for employers. They know that if they don't give employees the chance to leave when the weather turns bad, a court of law my hold them responsible if something bad were to happen on the way home due to bad weather. We probably have gotten wimp and lazy but I think most of it is people covering their behind.
