C Starter Switch

Trying to coordinate final finishing touches on our C restoration out at the farm. I'll be going out for Christams and Uncle and I were talking tonight trying to make sure we have everything we'll need to get her running and we're a little stuck on the starter switch that mounts on the starter? We thought it was a solenoid, but apparently it's not. It wasn't there when we took it apart, and he's talked to someone that said it's just a switch and it mounts on top of the starter and has a bolt or stud that holds it in. He's ordered the part, but we're concerned about mounting it. Might anyone have a picture of one to help us out?

And I'll search the archives, but if anyone has a wiring diagram for a C that would be real helpful too.

Thanks

B

the starter switch is very simple to mount. There are 2 screws on either side of the switch. They are 10x24x 1/4" long ,if I am not mistaken. There is a gasket that goes under the switch. There is a lever that activates the switch, which is attached to a rod from the steering pedestal that you pull to start. As far as the wiring, the battery cable runs to the post on the switch and another wire runs back to the on/off switch.

Go to the link below for Bob M's wiring diagrams. They are great. Here is a pic of the starter switch on a SMTA, I think it is the same or similar on the C.

Thanks Dale, that helps some. He ordered the gasket too, and now we know what kind of screws/bolts to get since they seem to have disappeared.

We have to run all the wire, not just the battery. Gen, Mag, lights, etc.

Red: When you get the new switch, check it to make sure button is operating freely. I bought a new one last winter, and the button stuck after tractor started. Ruined both battery and starter.

My new switch came from CaseIH. I've owned 6 of these tractors lifetime, and that is first time I ever had one of those buttons stick. In fact this new switch was replacing the 50 year old original switch on my 130. I guess the Chinamen don't have the specs right, course they are making these out of recycled soup cans.

After the new battery and starter rebuild, I lubricated the button well with graphite. I do hope CaseIH is taking this to heart, I damn well wouldn't by anything new from them. And I am shopping for some new equipment.

Your starter should have a tapered button on the rear and is operated by a pull rod if it is the correct starter. Over the yrs many starters have been changed some with a threaded stud. If the button is at the front it is for an A or a B and those operate with a pushrod. You also need a wire going to the ammeter.

The part number is 1918405. I got mine from the local starter/generator repair shop. About $15.00 or you can order it from you local Case/IH dealer. I can email you the parts diagram if you need it.

I don't think this would have come from an A or B, not many in KS. Not many C's either, mostly just H's and M's.

I don't remember anything about it from the tear down. I don't think there was one on it at all. No reason we would've removed it from the starter if it was there.

Thanks for the input.

TSC has them, one size fits all, formed sheet metal housing, for maybe $10 to $15, don't recall. I have an old one with die-cast starter switch housing that looks really neat, but unfortunately it got broke in shipping. Utilizing the strength and electrical insulating properties of JB Weld, I was able to make it workable again and once painted the repair job isn't even visible.

Like almost everything today.

Except for my Chevy truck. 300k miles, not one repair needed. Japan isn't making anything better, IMHO.

Thanks for the help.
