I am new to this forum. I have been reading posts for a few weeks and I can't believe the great information that I have seen here.
My son and I are going to tackle a restoration on a Super C and then a Super M. The old C has been sitting in the machine shed and not run for 30 years. I believe the engine is locked up so that will be the first step. I am sure I will have some questions for you guys when I get started this spring.

welcome to the forum!!!!!! for now, get some oil in the cylinders on the c and get them soaking. me personally, i would get a gallon jug of pb blaster penetrating oil, pull each spark plug, fill the cylinder and put the plug back in. every couple weeks, check em and refill as necessary. lot of guys use automatic trans fluid, dextron. its sup to you!! spring time it may just loosen up for ya to start wrenching on.

Well my self I do not agree with Glen but thats ok. My self I would fill the cylinders with tranny fluid and walk away for a couple weeks. Always put the plug back in so as to keep dirt etc. out. I have popped a good many engines loose using ATF and so far out of 20 plus only 2 or 3 have not come loose

You definitely will learn a lot by reading this forum. I know nothing about mechanicing, but by reading this daily, I have been able to completely restore a 1939 M that had been out in a pasture for 25 years or longer. The engine was stuck in it. I agree with Gleen, start pouring some type pentitrating oil in the spark plug holes and hopefully, it will free it up before spring. Harley

Tom,
Ditto on the welcome. You are already familiar with the format, make sure to go thru at least two cups of coffee while discovering all the useful stuff on the left hand side of the page. Especially, the forum for practicing downloading pics, etc.

Welcome, this place can become addictive!!

Also make sure you have a good pair of gum boots setting beside your computer, as it gets deep here sometimes! Ha Ha.

now rich, i did mention the atf in the second half of my post, but i wanted to get the pb blaster suggestion in there ahead of you !!! lol!! i agree with you, atf does work good!!. you guys snowed in down there in missouri? we got about 5 inches of snow yesterday, put in close to 16 hours yesterday, dog tired today. i think when it snows, somehow it pushed the dumb button in a lot of peoples heads when they drive. had three wreckers running all night last nite. my hands are still froze, feet are cold, boots are soaking wet. i gotta retire to arkansas!!!!

You do not want to try to crank the engine over with the cylinders full of liquid and the spark plugs in their holes. You could bend a connecting rod or do other damage. I subscribe to the portion of the Hippocratic Oath which says; “First do no harm”. You might check the archives and see what else “old” has said on stuck engines. He has posted a lot of comments on the subject, that make sense to me.

Also, Tom, why not give us a little introduction to you and your son. At least, where you are located-anything else of possible interest to us.

Well, I grew up on a farm in Central IL and farmed 600 acres myself in the early 70s. My Dad just retired this year from farming, over 60 years. That's where I am getting the super c and super M. Can't stand to sell them. They mean more to me than anything I could get for them.

My son is 25 and absolutely loves old stuff. He's going to be my main wrench puller on these restorations. Cheap labor, huh?
Look forward to hearing from all of you. I'm sure I will have plenty of questions for you all.
Thanks,
Tom

Nope not snowed in. We got a dusting and a little ice but that was it. I sure wish we had got around 4-5 inches so the deer would stick out better. I only have till sunday to hunt deer here. As for the PB I have used both and found for the cost and what the 2 do that ATF cost less then haf and removes rust better

The starter motor does not produce enough torque to bend rods or hurt other parts, if it did then there would be lots of tractor with bent rods from having water in the cylinders. By the way ya I did not say to pull them back out but I figure that is a given any how I just say to be sure to put them back in when your not doing any thing to it to keep thing out that would hurt the engine. BTDT on many tractor with the plugs still in just to see if it would move which also helps to lube the valves because the ATF get to the valves by doing so

Welcome to the 'hood !!

If you like red tractors and especially the older letter series, this is the place.

I am in here everyday lurking and learning from others. Information that is invaluable to your cause. Believe me I have kept a lot of notes on this stuff. Things I know I will need going forward with my restoration projects.

These are the good ole boy's .. the ones that speak from hands on and from experience. Needless to say I am impressed as well.

Snow and ice in central Indiana finally.

Merry Christmas everyone !!

Welcome to the site. Put PB Blaster the the engine cylinders and tap the starter button once in a while and the motor will probably free up. Done it many times and PB Blaster is great stuff!!

Just wondering (since no one has mentioned it) but would it make any sense or help if you pull the valve cover and pour some atf/pb blaster around the valves & lifters & push rods and let them get a good soaking?

Do you need to or is there any way you can get some down on the main bearings, etc such as pump some through an oil plug? Help to maybe drain the oil and put some atf/new oil in the sump for when it does start cranking?

I haven't really dealt with stuck engines, but if the pistons can get stuck, just seems like a valve or main bearing can get stuck too.

Welcome

The way I have been getting engine to lossen up.
Is soak them for a few days the I jack the rear end and run a pipe threw the rear wheel, I then put the tractor in gear and let the pipe down on jack stands, and walk away. the weight of the tractor will keep pressure on the engine thus when it ready it breaks loose. Unless you have a cynlinder full of mud dobber nest :(

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome. Sure gonna be great to get some new blood on here. While you're waiting on the engine to free up you might as well spray every nut and bolt you can see with PB Blaster and let them soak too. give them a shot every two or three days. rw
