Snowblower Shearbolts

Hey fellows, Just replaced a universal joint in the PTO shaft of my snowblower, International model 80. This shaft has a place for two shearbolt that are 3/8"X 1 1/4. The bolts in there now are grade 8 and about half cut in half so I want to replace them. Do you think grade 8 bolts are right for this application? I'm thinking something less would be right. I just got this machine this summer and these shearbolts don't look original. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks PUTTER

Do you have a manual for the blower? I'd bet it's in there. But if it were mine I'd start at the lowest level, and then up to 5 if they shear easily.
Go over the entire rotor/auger assembly and check for excessive friction.

Gordo, I have looked for a manual at binder books and at the case ih website without any luck. If someone knows where i can get one I would appreciate it. I will start with the lowest grade I can find. Thanks for your input. PUTTER

I have a duel auger Farm King blower with the same style shear bolt set up in the pto shaft. In the manual it states grade 5 bolts to be used but if they shear to easily use grade 8. I use grade 8 and have done so since I bought it. Grade 5 break like glass when I hit just a little drift. The biggest thing is to keep them tight as they like to work loose. Make sure you have a good supply of them as you will go thru a lot of them a year, I sure do.

I'm not sure about what grade to use but - Something I learned a long time ago, If you run a blower to slow it will sear pins quicker then if you run it at full speed.

Hey Scott, Sounds like you have some experience with blowers. I have only used this one a couple times and the snow wasn't too deep. I think the U-joint was bad when I got it. Sure wish I had a cab. I'll go with the grade 5 bolts for now. This unit only has one auger. If you know any other tips please let me know. Thanks PUTTER
