I noticed a local used car dealer with a decent looking M on his lot. Has a wide front and what looks like a home made 3 point hitch. I"m thinking of selling my Farmall 300 so I thought I"d stop in and see what he had to say about the local tractor market. I asked if he had any interest and he said about 100 people. Said he had done his research and based on the wide front, 3 pt and the fact that it had been "restored" it was worth all of $3800. Said you can"t drive a trike on a hill and the restoration had been done "right" whatever that means. I said the wide front is nice unless you want to turn and he said the trike would break your arm if the tires hit something when the steering wheel spins. Stated it was a 1940 model and that restored M"s sold for $4K to $12K or something like that. I told him my 300 must be worth about $7000, when he mumbled something about he would buy it for $600. I didn"t bother to tell him the rims had been reversed and his tires were now on backwards as I walked out and he said $3800 firm. Guess I"ll stop in later in the week with my checkbook -- NOT! I guess for the right person maybe the price is not too bad, but I would sure want to know what the restoration entailed.

I've seen quite a few M's sell around here. Restored and not restored. Unless it had a loader on it I never saw one sell for more than 2 grand. Last week my wife's uncle sold a 50m restored but used a little, narrow front with live hydralics and behlen p/s for 1850. The wide front and 3pt do make it a little more desirable but I don't think it's 3800 desirable.

I hate to be the bearer of bad new, but because of the JD collector, hes probably about right. Were this a JD in similar condition, it would have already been sold. Seems everyone who owns a tractor is beginning to beleive he has a JD.

I've always heard that the reason the johnny poppers are so pricey is because there aren't as many of them as there are Farmall Hs and Ms.

That and John Deere has always done a great job of marketing. From a marketing perspective, "International Harvester" has way too many syllables... They may as well have called the company Amalgamated Agricultural Machinery Corporation Limited... Make a song out of that! :)

"he said the trike would break your arm if the tires hit something when the steering wheel spins"

Should have asked him how does that not happen on a wide front.

You asked him if there was any interest, and he replied "about 100 people". That tells me that out of the 100 that have looked, 100% think the price is too high. I expect that ol' M will be sitting right there on that lot for a long, long time. For what it's worth, green paint isn't selling very good right now either.

Show him the videos of my narrow front H "tipping over" while mowing road ditches...

I must have about seven broken arms by now, too, since I use that tractor all summer for mowing and raking!

My experience with salesmen in general is that they are so full of hot air that they almost float, and whatever is on the lot is gold - while whatever you own is manure. We've found one honest salesman and have bought several things from that dealership in the last year...

The most I ever sold an "M" for was $2,500, and that had wide front, power steering, M&W 9-speed transmission, disc brakes, 12v, live hydraulics, new rear tires, new radiator and recent engine overhaul. No new paint or 3pt, just a swinging drawbar.

For sure,

I've got an H and a M both. These tractors were more or less "perfect" when I bought 'em.

By the time they were ready for any real field work tho, I've got well over $5K in each. :>(

No $700 M's around here. If it's running, no matter how bad the rest is, it's 1200.
I look at the tin, tires, accessories first . Can do a good in frame engine for less than two new rear tires.

or if they'd just bit the bullet and called them Binders like about everyone called them anyway or better - just stuck with Farmall.

That is a Great line, salesmen work on commission, the honest ones soon starve to death.

Talk about tractor $!Everyone go on the photo or classifieds in CT and see how much these guys are getting for stuff here,it's off the chart!

Just saw a good straight early SM sell for $3000 at a local consignment sale. Tires were decent and the tin was above average. The block was patched and had the original paint. Marv

I agree with previous posters that it would be easy to have $3800 in $1000 M, but you better not count on getting your money back out of it.

Was that at the Mt Pleasant sale? I wanted to go, but had a guy wanting hay and never did make it. I seen a SM there went for 3000

Boomer22 Yes, that was the SM at Mt. Pleasant. The results of their recent sale can be found at

They had a nice M bring $2100. at their September sale. Marv

For that 3800 I bet you put nearly another grand into nickel and dimming you to death the first year. When all is said and done all h's and M's turn out to be close to 3-4 grand to get it into work clothes. I'm nearly at a grand with my $200 M. I still needs a rebuild, clutch, etc, etc etc,. When that's all done I'll have a tractor that lasts a very long time but won't be worth nearly what I've got into it.

Hi Allen,

Very nice tractors. I could not agree with you more regarding the amount of money you have to put into them. I think I am up to $7,000 in my M in total costs, but after biting the bullet, she will last me the rest of my life.

I appreciate all of your useful input. Jake.

$1500 will get this one loaded on your trailer! It is a 48 M with 3 point 12V and Power Steering/ live hydros and mostly decent original paint. (The hood and grill were repainted). It did develop a loud knock in the engine while idling one day and I only had 10 feet to go to get it parked so I shut her down and used the starter to move it into place so I doubt it got hurt much if at all. Haven't had time to look it over though. Just need to let her go and work on one of the other 50 or so projects around here that need fixing. It was running great before the knock happened and the rear and tranny and clutch are excellent! It has 14.9 38 tires on the rear with wheel weights and calcium and one is fairly new. The rest of the tires are old but ok. I got my H going great and just don't need a tractor as big as the M. I may list in in the 4 sale area also but just thought I would mention it here. It is in west central Indiana.
