Hard Starting H

Today I got my 42" H running that had been sitting for about 2 years. At first itwould not start so I figured the carb was plugged up. I did put stabil in the gas before I parked it though. Took the carb apart and cleaned everything very well and reassembled with all new gaskets. Still could not get it to start with the hand crank. Its never been converted to electric start. Finally I pulled it with another tractor and it started right up. Runs great at all rpms. I let it run about 30mins and then shut it down. But it still won"t start with the hand crank. It used to start with one or two cranks before it was parked. Could the points maybe need cleaned up? Any suggestions? Thanks Bob

Bob,

It would not hurt to clean the points, but I would drain the gas and give it some fresh unleaded ( with a dose of Stabil).

If you have a mag maybe your rotor isnt lined up with the tower when it fires that why when you pull it will start. You need to take the cap off and using the crank observe when it impulses that its line with the tower.

I have been through this many times. We had a 200 that we let set up for about 6-months each year. As long as we used it regular it started and ran great. After setting up it was a bugger to start and would run rough until we ran about two tanks of gasoline through it. We would have to drain the carburator and flush the fuel line several times as well as the sediment bowl. It just did not seem to like old gas. I suggest you put it under load and run it for a couple of days.

Probally dirty points, and stale gass.Work the tractor as much as you can,and it will get better.Usally if it is a weak mag it will start when pulling becaues the motor is turning faster

Is the magneto impulse coupling working? It should make a loud "snap" with each 1/2 revolution of the hand crank.

If the impulse is not working there's no way the engine can be started using the hand crank. Yet it will still pull start easily and run fine.

Frequently simply cleaning and oiling a sticking impulse will get it working again.

Sure sounds like a mag problem(won't start with crank, fires right up when pulled). Is the impulse snapping when cranked? Never can hurt to clean points and rotor and contacts, lube impulse and run her a while to maybe buid up the magnetism in the mag??

The mag does snap when I use the hand crank. I did clean the sedient bowl and I'm getting good flow to the carb. I did drain most of the old gas and added some new. Maybe I'll trying draining it all and adding new. Does the mag have to be removed to clean the points. When the engine was rebuilt I had to mag overhauled by a electrical shop. Any tips on cleaning the points? Thanks Bob

Don't really know, just have had luck running one with a weak mag and having it not so weak after some continuous running. Burned corrosion off connections?? Charged the condenser?? Just threw a better spark after a day of plowing. Really frustrating when you explained to the "mag guru" what problems you were having then give the crank a half turn and have the thing fire and start.

If your mag got better over time just from running it. The problem was most likely the points a bit corroded and it burnt off after a while or polished itself from the use.

Or the snap coupler loosened up.

Well I got a chance today to work on it a little more. I took the mag cap off and the rotor is lining up with the tower with the impulse snaps. While in there I cleaned the points and rotor contacts. Also drained all of the old gas from tank, sediment bowl and carb. Still won't start. Maybe I should just take the mag and have it gone through. Any idea what that costs now. Last time it was done was about 7 yrs ago and I think it was about 60.00?? Any other ideas? Thanks Bob
