c263 valve clearance adjustment setting?

Hi to all, Since my rebuild last December (A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE TRACTOR VET FOR YOUR WISDOM AND GUIDENCE)Iam at about 100 hours and wanted to adjust the valve clearance again. At one hour I retorqued the head bolts and reset the valve clearance to .027 intake and .o27 exhaust according to the operators manual that I purchased. Just got done looking at the rebuild sheet from the machine shop and the Navistar specs state that intake setting is .027 and exhaust is .030. Has there been an update from IH that makes the the exhaust valve setting .030 from .027? Also is there an easier way to get the engine to DC twice for piston 1 and 6 so as to adjust 6 valves at once? Trying to crank my way to exactly DC must be a lost art. Scott

IH engine service manual ISS 1040-1, Rev 3 11/75, section 2, page 5 says you can adjust the 1,2,4 intake valves and 1,3,5,exhaust valves with #1 at TDC and marks lined up. Rotate the crankshft 1 rev and line up TDC mark and adjust 3,5,6 intake and 2,4,6 exhaust.

turn it to dc by hand. use either the fan blade or a socket/breakerbar on the crank nut. remove spark plugs if you want to make it turn really easy.

Not that am aware of . As i still set them for MOST engines at the .027 for the C221 thru the 301 Bring her up on #1 TDC and ya set 1,2,3 then skip 4 set 5 skip 6 set 7 skip 8 and set 9 , roll the engine over back to TDC then set 4 -6-8-10-11-12 all done . Also watch vary carefully for bridging on the rocker arm and valve stem and the feeler gauge as the rocker arms will ware and you can get the feller gauge between a high spot on the rocker arm and this will throw ya off on the set , so here the true meaning of FEELER GAUGE comes into play as ya want to just catch the side of the feeler gauge on the worn side of the rocker arm and the valve stem . Now if the rocker arms have been reground then this is not a big problem SOOOOOooooo look real close when your adjusting valves and FEEL the set

Thanks for the reply Tractor Vet. I will continue to set the exhaust valve clearance at .027. The explanation of how to do it clears up confusion for me from doing it last time. Not being someone with a lot of experience mechanically I was expecting two surfaces that were flat like a set of points to put the feeler gauge between. Thankfully I did get the rocker arms reground like you said last year so I probably got them pretty close 99 hours ago but now I will know what I am doing.
By the way you were right on with what happened to my then 5 cylinder 656. Burnt exhaust valve - looked like someone torched the under side of it. That and a worn cam lobe and a cracked valve guide. $2900.00 machine work and $1100.00 for all the other things that needed replaced and I got a nice running tractor like you said. I didn't get to turn it into a 291 - no one with enough knowledge and a much higher machine shop cost made me satisfied with the 263. Much thanks again, Scott
