I received a Christmas card in the mail with an enclosed note informing me that, “A donation has been made in your name to the xyz charity.”
Well guess what!
I do not want my name affiliated with that corrupt embezzlement riddled organization.
I do not want my name added to yet another gimme, gimme mailing list.
I do not want my personal information put into the hands of yet another potential identity thief.
If you want to donate to the xyz charity go ahead, have at it, but leave me out of it.
For anyone to think they have the right to decide someone else’s charitable affiliation is not only rude and arrogant but a gross invasion of privacy.
The decision on where, when and how I choose to “give back to society” is my decision, not yours.

I may not win any converts here and I’m not trying to dampen the spirit of sharing, but this practice has been bothering me forever and I’m not going to tolerate it any longer. I am going to return the paperwork with a note informing the offender that they do not have permission to affiliate my name with any organization not of my choosing and instruct them to have my name removed from the organizations records.

Well, I never thought of it that way, you would have to know someone pretty well to make a donation in their name. Now a neighbor lady passed away and her family requested donations to St. Jude's children hospital, so I can see that.

I would feel the same way if someone donated in my name to PETA for instance!!!

So you think my abundant bother in law is going to be mad because I bought him an annual membership to the NRA, complete with a monthly subscription to the Rifleman magazine?

No need to get upset -- everyone's name is on many mailing lists. I donate to certain charities. The rest usually go in the trash unopened. It's all computerized, you will never get rid of it.

I can see his point .... here in MN at least, if you want to be on the "do not call list" you can enter your name onto a central list controller and the pests legally have to leave you alone... unless you have a prior "business" relationship with them, which (oh goody) by someone donating money in your name, they now have one with you.

My BILmade a donation to the Victoria's Secret Foundation. Now I get all that disgusting stuff. What a jerk! Can I sue?

Sometimes you have to be careful what you throw out -- or at least HOW you throw it out.

A few months ago I received a request from a charity, and slipped it into the shredder unopened. Unfortunately, the envelope contained a small metal coin-like object that destroyed a $200 shredder!

I sort the mail in front of the wood stove.
