SMTA Power Steering

It's a done deal. Bored and fit the new shaft, using the press, table, and level, and it went in like a rolex. Used the special "swivel" connector on the power side of the T/G . No leaks, no runs, no errors.
Like driving a Cadillac. If you are still using "Armstrong" steering you gotta go the cChar Lynn way.

BTW the local machine shop charged me 48 cents an inch, plus labor, plus fitting, for that little fuel/oil return hose.

Thanks to all you guys, Glenster, Karl, Jim,

Just motoring ...Gordo

Gordo - Isn't that Charlyn PS sweet?!! My Super M came to me with a Charlyn installed - it indeed "steers like a Cadillac"!

Tip: Watch the cap screws that attach the manifold to the T/G body. Mine tend to loosen over time. A about once a year I gotta retorque 'em to keep the T/G from dripping hydraulic oil onto the top of the engine.

Also keep an eye on the roll pin in the steering shaft. I had one partially shear. Fortunately I discovered and replaced it before it failed completely.

glad you got er up and running. that char-lynn power steering is the berries. makes it like a new tractor!! i have 2 m's with it, an h, and my w-9. the super m i have in pieces everywhere will also someday get power steering too!!!!

I put new seals in the manifold. Planed the manifold and the T/G. Shortened the hex screws a tad. Torqued it HARD. Locktite. Shimmed the bottom bolt of the bracket for an alignment issue.
As far as roll pins. I used two, but for assembly and take apart and fitting I used a 5/16 cap screw. Any downside on using them as a permanent intstall? I used a double nut to keep from compressing the collars. It's a thing of beauty to just tap that screw out instead of driving the pin out with a dolly backup. There's no problem with clearance.

I almost sold all the components for 300 bucks a year ago. But passed. Now I see a totally rebuilt system going for 800 or more!

as long as the cap screws are in there tight and there is no slop to wallow out the hole, the cap screws will be fine. sometimes there is a hood clearance issue. i have had a doulble roll pin work its way out on my h, caught it before it was out all the way. now i run small radiator hose clamps over the roll pins so them rascals dont try and escape again!!

Had the double roll pin on my H power steering come out, tore a nice hole in the hood, too!

That Char-Lynn ps on the H makes it steer better than the full-hydraulic steering tractors!
