560 tranny locked up or stuck in high gear

Love my 560 but....I was moving snow the other
night with a rear mounted snow blower. I had just finished backing and shifted to go forward. When I let out the clutch, the engine killed. I restarted put the shift in neutral, let out the clutch and it killed again. As near as I can tell, I'm either stuck in a high gear or the tranny is locked up. The shifter will go into
all positions except 4th. Also, when I let the
clutch out with moderate throttle, I don't detect
any slight movement forward which you would expect even if it was stuck for instance, in fourth gear.

Take a 9/16" wrench and remove the three screws that hold down the casting that the shift lever comes up out of. Lift the whole assembly out and you will be able to see the selectors. Use a big screwdriver to line them all up in the centered position (neutral) and put it all back together. In the future carry a 9/16" wrench and suitable screwdriver or other tool in the toolbox.

It's very likely that the nub on the end of the shifter is badly worn, and slipped out of the shifting forks.

For now, be very deliberate and careful about how you shift. Straight ahead, straight sideways. Don't try to "cut corners." The real fix is to get the nub welded up and ground back down to original spec. You can get an idea of the shape it needs to be by looking at the width and depth of the slots in the shifter rails once the lever is removed.

This is a much easier fix on a 560 than an M because you remove three bolts instead of having to disassemble the shifter gimbal. You're also right there flush with the surface of the transmission cover where on an M you have to reach down in a hole.

Gary: The transmission is in two gears at same time, from your description, most likely 3rd and 4th. Do as others have said, remove shift lever and line uo shift rails. Then before you put lever back, build up the end so it nicely fills a notch on one rail. Grind it smooth rounded a bit on corners, until it shifts easy.

Notice I said build up lever before you reinstall, a 560 has the ability to break gears and bend shafts. Believe me, I've been there and done that. It's not a pretty sight when you take top off transmission.

I have experienced this with a Ford 841 several times if you pull up on the shifter as you shift. Just keep light pressure down on the shift knob (if one is still there) and shift firmly, but not rough.

Just to follow up with the story for anyone interested in how it turned out. I took off the
shifter as suggested and the left rail was forward, which to my way of thinking put the tractor in 5th gear. I slid it back to neutral and looked over the notches in the rails and the end of shifter for wear (surprisingly little). I decided to try it again without welding and grinding, but if it happens again, I'll get more aggressive. The whole area was lacking in lube
so I treated it to a healthy dose of grease. I
don't know if that could have contributed to the
problem in the first place. Thanks for all the
great advice guys. This forum is the greatest
thing that ever happened for guys with old tractors!!!
