706D starting problem

Our 706 diesel acts like it does not get fuel while starting. It doesn"t smoke or cough and when the injection lines are loosened at the injector, no fuel comes out. This is is all with the throttle set wide open. However, the engine will start and run fine with just a small shot of starting fluid while cranking. It doesn"t cough or sputter like there was air in the fuel system or anything. Once started and warm, it will start again with no problem. Is there something wrong in the injection pump that keeps it from delivering fuel at cranking speed? This tractor started without starting fluid for a long time. Also, what is the best way to use starting fluid in an engine with glow plugs?

706 with glow plugs? Sounds like you have a D282.

Best way to use ether in a glow plug engine is DON"T. Unless you like the idea of an overhaul to replace busted pistons, broken rings, and ckacked head!!!!!!!!!!.

A D282 with good compression and all six glow plugs working and two GOOD batteries will start.

If you have been using ether to start for a long time, best plan on an overhaul.

Just some thoughts after years of feeding cattle with a 282 diesel:

1. Are you plugging the tractor in? They are a cold blooded SOB.

2. Are the glow plugs, batteries and starter all in good shape? That engine has to spin at least 250 rpm to develop enough heat to ignite.

3. Have you advanced the injector pump timing 1 degree for cold weather operation? Makes all the difference in the world with cold starting on this engine.

4. Tried starting with the throttle at 1/3 position instead of wide open?

5. Good clean air and fuel filters?

The engine is a D282. We have a block heater installed, but plugging the engine in does not help. The engine has a new battery and cables and cranks over well. All the glow plugs have also been tested and are working properly. I think problem is related to the fact that the injection pump does not deliver fuel while cranking. It acts as if the injection pump loses its prime while shut off. It may help to know that it's the Stanadyne rotary type pump. It will do this after being shut down for as little as a half hour.

like all diesels it needs to crank fast enough to build enough heat to fire
i think people forget how much heat a big cold engine block will absorb

Allan...
Is the pump advance procedure in one of the manuals...(i'm in here and my books are "out" there in the cold)...??

Also I usually had throttle at 3/4...but I bumped the starter a little to fuel the motor before hitting the glow plugs....my own crazy idea...thought id preheat the fuel in the cups...dunno..

I need to get a few things ready for my 560 before next winter to feed round bales.....this is the last year of square bales for me....

trying to find a cord for the existing heater...it has a heater in the soft plug...two prongs...or do you have to get the entire unit??
