'48 H temperature gauge-sending unit

Chad - The sending bulb is filled with a low boiling point liquid - ether perhaps(?). The gage head is actually a pressure gage. A thin capillary tube inside wire-wound armor connects bulb to the gage.

The vapor pressure in the bulb varies directly with bulb temperature. The pressure gage senses this pressure and displays it as a temperature reading.

----

Tip: Don't ever cut, kink or otherwise modify the sensing bulb or capillary tube! The gage assembly is NOT repairable - the only fix if damaged is to replace with new.

If you don't care about originality or correctness, a generic temp guage will get the job done for a bunch less money. NAPA, CarQuest, etc.

Dang - that is cool!

Key is to get a perfect solder joint, then a decent gage calibration.

If you get a new one, be sure the tube is long enough to reach from your sender location to the mounting point for your gage. I have seen some that were as little as 24-inches. LMack
