Rewiring a 6 volt Generator to 12 volts

I am thinking of having my 6 volt generator which is not working converted to 12 volts instead installing a alternator.I am having trouble placing an alternator in the necessary space under the hood. Will this provide me with the necessary voltage. Also, anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram for a 300 utility . My wiring is frayed and original and really needs to be replaced.

Sure it will, if its converted to a 12 volt genny it will charge a 12 volt battery, thats the whole idea. Actually, while I'm NOT recommending this (its NOT engineering correct) I've used 6 volt gennys as is no conversion and just changed to a 12 volt Voltage Regulator and they worked okay (it can overcurrent the field windings ya know). A shop can convert it from 6 to 12 volts and will change out the Field windings and do it right, however. Or just buy a used or rebuilt already 12 volt genny.

Of course, you also need a 12 volt Voltage Regulator if you stay with a generator and use a 12 volt generator,,,,,,,,,,,, Change any lights to 12 volts,,,,,,,,,,,,EITHER use a new full true 12 volt coil (NO ballast required) or else if you use a 6 volt coil add an external voltage dropping (12 to 6) series ballast resistor after the ignition switch but before and ahead of the coil.

If you wanna change polarity the ammeter leads need swapped or it will read bass ackwards,,,,,a coil should match the battery polarity, i.e. at Pos ground its lil - terminal gets ignition switched voltage input while its other lil + wires to distributor but at neg ground thats reversed.

Dont forget to POLARIZE the genny BEFORE you start the tractor !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you go with an alternator instead most all require Negative ground.....

Got it???

The Hitachi alternator off a late '70's Datsun 610 pickup isn't much bigger than the stock generator. I've gotten one to fit under the hood of my H and a 300 has more room under the hood than that.

I've also heard of people managing to mount a Delco 10si alternator under the hood of an H. Dunno how they do it. They must have to get it just perfect.
